FEG Projects
FEG Consulting plays a central role in a number of initiatives that provide livelihoods based technical guidance, policy advising, and capacity building support. Below is a list of active programs where FEG Consulting is the primary implementer or a major contributor.
The Livelihoods Integration Unit (LIU), housed within the Government of Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD) as part of the Early Warning and Response Directorate within the Disaster Management and Food Security Section, is a four-year USAID funded program. The LIU's primary goal is to build the capacity of government staff to integrate a livelihoods framework into the national early warning system. In the first three years of implementation over 1,200 people have been trained in HEA principles, information gathering, and analysis skills. Through this process the LIU staff, MoARD partners and SC UK, (through the concurrent Pastoralist Livelihoods Initiative) are establishing livelihood baselines in every region of the country. FEG’s role as the prime implementing contractor for the LIU, is to establish an effective nation-wide capacity building program, ensure high quality information is gathered, stored, and accessible for on-going early warning analysis; and to build effective partnerships that help broaden the use and application of the livelihoods information for health, livestock, water, and other sectors.
The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) activity is currently under a five year contract managed by Chemonics International and funded by USAID. Its aim is to provide food security early warning information, technical support, capacity building and network strengthening to partners working in FEWS NET countries. FEG has brought their extensive knowledge and experience in designing a modular livelihoods framework for FEWS NET. The result has been a harmonized approach that takes advantage of the skills of FEWS NET staff and its partners in designing, implementing, and analyzing livelihood information to identify food insecure populations and suggest effective humanitarian and development interventions.
Pastoral Areas Coordination, Analysis and Policy Support (PACAPS) is a two year USAID funded initiative aiming to improve and enhance the sharing of pastoral early warning information within the 'Mandera Triangle' region. FEG provides the Early Warning and Early Response component of PACAPS which links existing systems and actors into a regional mechanism. This coordinating entity will provide regional early warning and trigger an early response to problems affecting the cross-border area where the Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya borders meet.
