Making 'saving lives and livelihoods' a practical reality in Ethiopia
Since 2006, FEG has been the prime contractor responsible for developing the Livelihoods Integration Unit (LIU) within the Government of Ethiopia’s early warning system. After three years, the project has succeeded in developing a country-wide, standardized, quantified, and comparable set of baseline data for Ethiopia’s 173 livelihood zones. The LIU now houses the most extensive and comprehensive set of livelihoods-based household economy data in the world.
The livelihoods baseline data and corresponding analytical tools have already proven useful in a wide range of applications, including: early warning; emergency response planning, disaster risk reduction; social protection – including development, monitoring, and impact evaluations of social safety nets; and nutritional surveillance.
