Adhering to the humanitarian principle of neutrality

by Stephen Browne last modified 02/28/2008 18:21

Q: How can I analyze and report on political economy and conflict issues and still adhere to the humanitarian principle of neutrality?

A.Neutrality as a humanitarian principle refers to not taking sides in a conflict, or not being aligned with any particular group or party on political issues. In practice, being seen to be neutral while still understanding and reporting on the impacts of conflict and political issues is like walking a tightrope. The key is to focus in reports on humanitarian outcomes, and show that your primary concern is for those who are unable to meet their essential needs. In accountable societies, constructive suggestions on improving their situation should be welcomed, and those whose responsibility it is to ensure their welfare should be requested to fulfill those responsibilities. The balance is around doing so without being seen to favor one group over another.
