Delineating rural and urban zones
Q.How do you draw the line between urban and rural livelihood zones (both on a map and when calculating population figures)?
A. During livelihood zoning exercises we mostly look at rural economies and therefore are not as concerned with zoning urban centers. As far as the rural zones are concerned, it often makes sense to include the smaller towns in these, since many small-town dwellers participate in rural economic activities such as farming and livestock husbandry. In practical terms, you will have to decide on a figure (e.g. >5000) or a description (e.g. Admin Level 4 center) beyond which you will exclude the population from your rural zone.
