How is Livelihoods Analysis Helpful

Understanding the socio-economic architecture of households is crucial for making the right decisions about how to reduce poverty and build stronger livelihoods. FEG Consulting (previously known as the Food Economy Group) has been on the leading edge of livelihoods-based food security information systems, policy analysis and complex-process facilitation services for more then ten years, contributing to the efforts of a broad range of decision makers in the humanitarian and development community.

Its work in countries throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America has consistently focused on linking decision makers to the realities of poor people, across rural and urban communities, in pastoral and agricultural settings, and within both fragile states and settled communities.

FEG Consulting continues to set the standard for translating complex livelihoods into comprehensible outputs so that the needs of those most in need are prioritized.

FEG Spotlight

Making 'saving lives and livelihoods' a practical reality in Ethiopia

Since 2006, FEG has been the prime contractor responsible for developing the Livelihoods Integration Unit (LIU) within the Government of Ethiopia’s early warning system. After two and half years, the project has succeeded in developing a country-wide, standardized, quantified, and comparable set of baseline data for Ethiopia’s 173 livelihood zones. The LIU now houses the most extensive and comprehensive set of livelihoods-based household economy data in the world.

Response Analysis in the context of Disaster Risk Reduction

FEG recently designed an innovative response analysis guide for Oxfam GB’s Emergency Food Security and Livelihoods (EFSL) team. This guide integrates key questions related to response analysis in the context of the Disaster Risk Reduction framework and the One Programme approach, encouraging a holistic yet practical process. Ultimately the guide aims to help meet real needs while reducing the likelihood of doing unintended harm.

Monitoring and evaluation of program impacts on livelihoods in Sri Lanka

FEG conducted an extensive Individual Household Economy assessment (IHEA) between March and August 2008 to assist Save the Children Sri Lanka in establishing a pre-implementation baseline against which to monitor and measure the impacts of their 2008-2010 post-tsunami poverty reduction and child welfare improvement program. This is the first time such an extensive use of IHEA has been made for the purposes of Monitoring and Evaluation.

Livelihoods and climate change: Household Water Economy Analysis

In fall 2008, FEG further developed and began implementing Household Water Economy Analysis (HWEA) in Ethiopia’s Oromiya Region as part of the DFID-funded RiPPLE Long-term Action Research Study to better understand the livelihoods impacts of water access and how this access may be affected by climate change. HWEA complements HEA-based livelihoods analysis in this realm because water resources are among the first affected by climate change, and the knock-on effects of a changing climate can reverberate throughout livelihoods systems.
